Capable children

Sir, George Cairns (letter, August 17) should not dismiss too lightly activities which encourage him and his peers to “run around and play football and catch-type games”.

On Watergate beach this morning a group of beginners were taking part in exercises designed to introduce them to the super-cool, iconic sport of surfing. This included a warm-up run of about 200 yards. According to my husband (an engineer who prides himself on accuracy) about three quarters of them could not go the distance and came in at a walk. They then performed poorly in the waves.

Any game or pastime which encourages youngsters to run and be active will help them to derive more pleasure from life.

Yours faithfully,

ABIGAIL WATSON,
