June Competition winner: Juliette Binoche is the highest paid film actress in the history of France. She has won nine awards and has received numerous nominations. In addition to her many films she has also starred on Broadway. But the main reason she is my favourite French actress is due to her enthralling performance in Chocolat - she is perfect in the role of the sensuous and captivating Vianne. She enables the audience to really relate to her character by showing that she has flaws and is susceptible to error; she is not the perfect person that we are initially introduced to.
I also have great respect for Juliette Binoche because although she is an internationally acclaimed actress, she generally stays out of the limelight. She comes across as someone who has remained level-headed throughout her success - an inspiration for other actors and actresses.

Juliette Binoche is a woman I like contemplating just like a beautiful sunrise; I can listen to her voice and find music in it. She highlights the magnificent creature a woman can be.

And all these merits are topped with the fine performances she undertakes. She is by far my favourite cinema muse.

For me it has got to be between Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Adjani. They represent the everyday French woman. I remember seeing one of Adjani’s first films Un ete meurtrier. I thought she gave a really good performance. My choice is Isabelle Adjani.

My choice today would have to be Audrey Tatou. And today because she is here, now, and with a face of innocence and hidden fun and passion with the acting talent to match.

Audrey Tatou is my favourite French actress. She showed gravity in the light comedy of Amélie, and sparkling vibrancy in the drama of A Very Long Engagement. I think she is a superb technical actress with a great sense of timing. In short quite mesmerising.

Audrey Tatou is the reflection of how to be an excellent actress. She changed what it is to be a postmodern actress without losing her own stlyle and beliefs. I think she is not a diva and that a huge amount of women may be influenced or connected with her.

Juliette Binoche has to reign supreme here .... even if only judged on her performances in Les Amants du Pont Neuf and the stunning Three Colours Blue .... she manages to combine sex appeal with profundity .... a rare talent by anybody’s standards!

Actually, I think Isabel Huppert supercedes the two actresses you’ve asked that we choose between. Although Binoche and Tatou are incredibly talented, Huppert’s range of representation, her courage to portray seriously disturbed and, at times, repulsive character take her to the top, for me.
