ANDY BISHOP ENDED Peterborough United’s unbeaten start to the season with a last-minute penalty for Bury in a bruising encounter at London Road.
For Chris Casper, the young Bury manager, the result was just reward for chasing the game until the last. “Putting one forward for another with ten minutes to go signalled our intent,” he said.
Any hope of a shoot-out between two of last season’s Nationwide Conference hotshots — Bishop, who was at York City at the time, and Justin Richards, the home team’s summer signing from Woking — proved forlorn, despite the latter being called into early action from the bench.
Bishop’s best chance came and went with a shot over the bar after three minutes. Richards mustered only a volley straight at Kasper Schmeichel, on loan from Manchester City, in a match full of collisions. Keith Alexander, the Peterborough manager, saw no malice in the challenges on Simon Yeo (broken cheekbone) or Guy Branston (broken nose).
