Burton Copeland, which is based in Manchester, is one of the largest providers of publicly funded criminal defence services in the northwest. Since being established more than 35 years ago, the firm has garnered a reputation as one of the UK’s leading criminal law firms, working on matters from serious and organised crime to regulatory work and road traffic. Much of its work is confidential.

The firm leads the way in the use of information technology, particularly the development of database applications for use in voluminous cases. It also has telephone and case management systems that allow remote working.

Gwyn Lewis, the senior partner, chairs the Manchester Law Society Crown and Magistrates Court Committee and the managing partner, Louise Straw, chairs the Society’s Legal Education Committee.
