Brown guides leaders to safety

BRISTOL (final day of four): Gloucestershire (12pts) drew with Warwickshire (10)

DOUGIE BROWN was fed up with himself when he drove a catch to short extra cover with 11 overs left against Gloucestershire. But he had done enough in the preceding 3½ hours to make all but certain that Warwickshire would retain their unbeaten record, and in earning four points for a draw to their six bonus points, assembled extra ballast for the closing matches in the championship.

It was a fine effort by Brown, one that was well in character. By nature an aggressor, but before that essentially a team-man, he adapted to the role of a latter-day Chris Tavaré so easily that neither his team-mates nor himself can have missed a heartbeat.

Mark Wagh and Jonathan Trott, the overnight pair, had stretched their second-wicket stand to 163 before James Averis dislodged Wagh. Trott followed next over but Jim Troughton and Michael Powell resisted for more than 20 overs each, then came Brown.
