Sir, I worked as the personal assistant to Maurice and Charles Saatchi in the Seventies. I can’t decide whether my life would have been easier in this age of mobiles and emails versus a bank of nine “round dial” telephones, a fax machine and a clattery old telex. The demands of the job were “most of the above”, to quote Jermain Defoe’s requirements (report, Aug 25), but the successes of the job included tracking down a long-playing disco single that one of the brothers heard in the Embassy nightclub in Bond Street, which I eventually found in New York, as well as tracking down rare garden plants that were only to be found in Italy. My proudest moment was “delaying” Concorde’s take-off when one of the brothers was stuck in traffic. I loved every moment, from discussing paintings to analysing the creative work of potential acquisitions and walking Ludo the dog.
