A British man has been arrested after posing for a naked photograph on the ancient archaeological site of Machu Picchu.

Adam Burton, 23, took off his clothes alongside his French travel companion, Eric Xavier Mariec, 28, at the Peruvian landmark.

The pair were immediately arrested and taken to court, where they were charged with moral misconduct.

Police released the pictures – which feature the ruined fifteenth century citadel in the background - that the pair took with their camera phones in an attempt to deter other people from doing so.

Machu Picchu, which has an average of over a million visitors every year, recently reopened after being closed in February for maintenance and restoration.

Peruvian authorities announced a clampdown in March 2014 over the increasing number of tourists stripping off either to take photos or go streaking at the site.

The men can take solace in knowing that they are not the first to have been caught with their clothes off at Machu Picchu.

In 2013 two men were arrested after their bared their backsides at the Unesco world heritage site.

The pair – a 30-year-old from New Zealand and an 18-year-old from Australia – were ordered to delete naked pictures of themselves from their phones, even though they had already uploaded them to Peruvian websites where they ended up going viral.

There was a similar case in Malaysia last year when Eleanor Hawkins was jailed after taking off her clothes on Mount Kinabalu.
