British pair into 200m second round

Joice Maduaka and Abi Oyepitan have made it into tonight’s second round of the 200 metres.

Maduaka, who is coached by Linford Christie, is competing in her second Olympics and the experience shone through as she did just enough to book fourth spot in her heat in a time of 23.15 seconds.

Oyepitan has improved this year and made the semi-finals of the 100 metres here, but the 200 metres is her preferred distance and she looked very comfortable when finishing second in the following heat in a personal best of 22.50.

”I’ve got to be pleased with that,” said Oyepitan. ”I didn’t go too fast and think I have got a bit left for tonight because I slowed down at the end to conserve my energy. It all went according to plan.”
