The British Museum is staging the first Michelangelo exhibition in 30 years this spring, reuniting drawings that have not been together since the posthumous dispersal of his studio in 1564.
Closer to the Master, from March, 23, will offer an insight into one of the greatest Renaissance artists, focusing on his virtuosity as a draftsman and ability to express human emotion through the body’s posture. Some 90 drawings, including Sistine Chapel studies, will be seen in Britain for the first time.
Hugo Chapman, the curator, said Michelangelo, who kept his drawings from view, “wanted people to go into the Sistine Chapel and think ‘wow’ — and not think of the honing and refining that went into creating that image”.
