British Day?

Sir, As a former soldier, I treat Remembrance Sunday as a solemn occasion on which I stand before our local war memorial and think about soldiers from throughout the world who have perished in wars. It is politicians who send soldiers to die on battlefields in far away places.

How insensitive, therefore, for Gordon Brown, who has never served in the Army and who participated in the decision to send British troops to Iraq, to suggest that we treat Remembrance Sunday as a British “fun” day.

Sir, When I was young we had a day to celebrate being British. It was called Empire Day. Who abolished it?

Sir, British Day is alive and kicking — and in Germany. Our annual two-day event celebrates the British way of life and culminates with many thousands singing lustily to the strains of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the Queen.

The audience is more than 80 per cent German.
