Britain to be hit by gales this weekend

Britain will be battered by potentially dangerous gales and gusts of up to 75mph this weekend, forecasters said today.

Wales, the Midlands, and the northern counties of England are most likely to be affected by the south-westerly gales, but the path of the storm remains uncertain, forecasters said. It is likely to be windier than at any time last winter.

Julian Mayes, a forecaster with MeteoGroup UK, said: “It’s going to be extremely unsettled and windy, particularly through Saturday as a deep depression crosses Ireland and Scotland.

“All areas are going to be windy. The areas which are most likely to have damaging gales will be dependent on the exact track taken by the depression.”

Ireland, the Midlands, northern England and Wales will all be at risk from high winds and heavy rain.

Mr Mayes added: “It’s likely to be windier than at any time last winter, which was unusually quiet.”

Motorists and members of the public were advised to plan ahead for any weekend activities as strong winds and heavy rain increase the threat of flooding. The vigorous autumn storm, which is expected to arrive on Saturday, will develop over the eastern Atlantic tomorrow.
