Chris Hughton, the Brighton & Hove Albion manager, dedicated his side’s thrilling 3-2 win at Ipswich to the memories of Matt Grimstone, a club groundsman, and Jacob Schilt, a supporter, who both lost their lives in the Shoreham air disaster.

An emotional week for Brighton, in which the club have given up part of their training ground to help police investigating the crash, ended with them displacing Ipswich as leaders of the Sky Bet Championship.

“The club has done an incredible job in helping the local police and everyone wanted to do well for Matt and Jacob,” Hughton said.

The foundations were laid for the victory in the first 12 minutes as Brighton raced into a two-goal lead through Kazenga LuaLua and Tomer Hemed.

Freddie Sears’ effort early in the second half got Mick McCarthy’s men back in it and then David McGoldrick equalised from the spot in the 64th minute only for Hemed to head home Brighton’s winner three minutes later.

Hull City moved into second place courtesy of a 2-0 win over Preston North End, with Abel Hernandez’s fortuitous effort and a Curtis Davies strike in either half proving enough.

Cardiff City’s good start continued as they won 2-1 at Nottingham Forest, with Kenwyne Jones’ first-half header and Joe Mason’s strike good enough to take the points back to Wales, despite Michail Antonio’s late consolation.

Tjaronn Chery’s goal seven minutes from time made it three wins in a row for Queens Park Rangers as they saw off Huddersfield Town 1-0.

Middlesbrough got back to winning ways with a 3-1 success at Sheffield Wednesday. Adam Reach put the visitors in front just before half-time but Marcos Matias’ 64th-minute deflected effort brought Wednesday level only for Diego Fabbrini to restore the lead three minutes later and Christian Stuani sealed victory late on with a fine finish.

Burnley flexed their muscles with a routine 2-1 success at struggling Bristol City as first-half headers from Ben Mee and Michael Keane earned the points and meant Jonathan Kodja’s reply with the last kick of the game for Bristol City was meaningless.

Reading secured the points in the M4 derby with a 3-1 win at Brentford. Orlando Sa’s close-range strike and a thumping Nick Blackman free kick gave the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead, with the hosts unable to build on Lasse Vibe’s response after the break. Blackman’s late penalty kick made sure Reading claimed all three points.

Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to beat Charlton Athletic 2-1, Adam Le Fondre scoring the winner with five minutes remaining after Dave Edwards had cancelled out Johann Gudmundsson’s 55th-minute opening goal.

Birmingham City’s impressive start to the campaign continued with a 2-0 win at MK Dons, Stephen Gleeson and Jacques Maghoma providing the goals, while Fulham earned their first win of the season - a 3-1 success - at Rotherham United, who are still to enjoy that feeling.

Ben Pringle, a former Rotherham player, opened the scoring and Ross McCormack doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Jonson Clarke-Harris reduced the deficit reduced the arrears in the second half but Cauley Woodrow put the result beyond doubt in the 90th minute.

In the early kick-off, a superb late strike from Chris Wood gave Leeds United a 2-1 victory at Derby County to record their first win of the season.
