Breaking act: Roisin O

A little nepotism still goes a long way in the music trade, and it has helped to fast-track the Irish singer-songwriter with distinctive vocals

Who is she?

Róisín O’Reilly — Róisín O — is the new kid on the Irish singer-songwriting circuit. She’s just finished a stint supporting Mary Black in the Olympia theatre and has opened for The Coronas. Not bad for a virtually unknown 22-year-old from Dublin’s Harold’s Cross — until you learn Black is her mother and the Coronas’ frontman is her older brother, Danny. And, oh, her auntie is Frances Black, the singer.

A little nepotism goes a long way in the music trade, and it has helped fast-track Róisín O to a better slot at next month’s Indiependence festival in Cork, alongside Editors, Ash and Therapy. Yet her new EP, The Thrill, proves she was worthy of a helping hand: the five-track shows off distinctive vocals that curl around her Irish lilt and hit all the right notes.

When’s the music available?

The Thrill is on iTunes and at myspace.com/roisino.
