Brazilian touch helps Constantine samba to award

With autumn fast approaching, Leon Constantine has brought a little bit of Brazilian sunshine to Port Vale. The London-born forward, 28, scored five goals in his first four games to win the August Powerade Player of the Month award for League One and credits a summer holiday to the South American country as part of the reason for his fine form.

“I had a really chilled break during the summer and I think that helped. I went to Salvador in Brazil and completely relaxed. But when I started scoring I thought there must have been something in the water!

“In truth, I put a lot of hard work in before we got back to pre-season training. It’s very easy just to let yourself go during the summer and drink beer but I made sure I went to the gym and stayed fit.

“I’m not one to put on too much weight generally but the extra work has paid off and I appear to be reaping the rewards now.

“You can’t ask for much better than five goals in four games but it’s not all down to me, the team’s been performing really well. Everyone has been working hard.

“One goal every two or three games is what strikers look for and I know exactly how many I would like to get for the season. I have a magic target but I will never reveal it.

“All I try to do is get my head down, work hard and make sure the goals keep flowing.

“I get just as much pleasure from being involved in the build-up play as I do scoring, though. I like to create as well as score and it felt good to set up Danny Whitaker’s goal against Doncaster on Sunday.

“My strengths are getting the ball into feet and playing little one-twos which obviously involves the rest of the team.

“I’m not one of those strikers that hangs around for 70 minutes waiting for the ball to come to him before he has a chance.

“If we carry on the way we have started we truly believe we can get promoted this season. Although we have lost our last two games to Yeovil and Doncaster, the management team have instilled a belief in us that we can beat any team in this league and our play reflects that.

“Martin Foyle [the manager] gives us confidence on the training pitch and we take that with us into the games.

“My partnership with Akpo Sodje has also been working well which gives me even more belief. Now we just have to get back on track after those two disappointing defeats.”
