A two-year-old boy is in hospital with serious facial injuries after he was mauled by a dog at a Diamond Jubilee street party.

Keiron Guess was in a critical condition last night after the attack in Swindon, Wiltshire, on Sunday in a neighbour’s garden.

The animal, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier, attacked the boy in a back garden during celebrations.

One resident said that dozens of people had been enjoying the party when, at about 6pm, they heard “awful growls followed by screams”.

“Everyone ran to see what was happening and a man tried to pull the dogs off this poor wee tot,” he said. “The little boy was in a bad way with blood streaming down his face.”

A 49-year-old man who tried to pull the dog off the terrified child has been treated for injuries to his hand.

The boy was taken by air to Frenchay Hospital, in Bristol, where yesterday his parents were at his bedside.

The dog has been seized by police but no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

Wiltshire Police said that officers went to Swanage Walk, in the Moredon area of Swindon, at 6pm on Sunday. The child was taken to Frenchay Hospital with serious facial injuries. A 49-year-old local man was also injured and received treatment for a hand injury which is not thought to be serious,” a spokesman said.

The force has appealed for anyone with information about the dog attack to contact them.
