Border break

Bhutan isn’t exactly tourist-ridden, with fewer than 10,000 tourists allowed to enter every year — but it’s now possible to explore deeper into the wilds.

The eastern border between Bhutan and India has recently opened up, allowing travellers to cross the country on a single-lane, winding mountain road through Tashigang and the eastern Bumthang forests, and crossing into Assam, in India, near Samdrup Jongkhar.

Steppes Travel is one of the first tour operators to offer packages. It has a Bhutan-and-Assam trip from £3,160 per person, with flights into and out of Guwahati, the state capital of Assam. Charlotte Furney, a spokeswoman, said: “It’s great news as people have always asked about going.”
