Sir, I recall standing next to a very well known female singer of popular songs when in a large London bookshop just after the end of the Second World War (letter, June 14).
She was explaining to a bewildered assistant that, following redecoration in one of the rooms in her home, she needed “just over two and a half yards of books”.
