Board moves: Banker Bond takes helm at Xstrata

Sir John Bond is to succeed Willy Strothotte as chairman of Xstrata, the mining giant, in May. Bond, 69, who is to step down after five years as chairman of Vodafone, spent 45 years at HSBC, lastly as group chairman. He is a non-executive director of AP Moller-Maersk and Shui On Land and chairman of KKR Asia.

- Lucinda Bell has been appointed to succeed Graham Roberts as finance director of British Land, with a seat on the board. Bell, who joined British Land in 1991, is currently deputy finance director. Simon Borrows and William Jackson join British Land as non-executive directors. Borrows, 52, is chairman of Greenhill & Co International and a non-executive director of Inchcape. Jackson, 47, is managing partner of Bridgepoint, the private equity firm.

- David Wild is to join the board of Premier Foods as a non-executive director. Wild, 55, is chief executive of Halfords. He was previously Walmart’s senior vice-president of new business development in San Francisco and led Tesco in central Europe during almost two decades with the retailer.

- Simon Thompson has joined Tullow Oil as a non-executive director. The 51-year-old was previously an investment banker at SG Warburg and NM Rothschild, an executive director of Anglo American and chairman of Tarmac. He is a non-executive director of Newmont Mining, Sandvik and Amec.

- Phuthuma Nhleko has been appointed to the board of Anglo American. Nhleko, 50, this month becomes vice-chairman of MTN, the telecoms group, where he has been chief executive since 2002. He joined BP as a non-executive director this year.

- Linda Stuntz joins Royal Dutch Shell as a non-executive director in June. The 56-year-old, a founding partner of Stuntz, Davis & Staffier, the Washington DC law firm, is a former deputy secretary of the US Department of Energy and served on the board of Schlumberger until last year.

- Eugenia Ulasewicz has been appointed by Bunzl, the distributor and outsourcer, as a non-executive director. Ulasewicz, 57, has been president of Burberry Americas since 1998.

- John Hughes has joined Vitec, the broadcasting technology group, as a non- executive director. Hughes, 59, formerly chief operating officer of Thales, is chairman of Spectris, Telecity and Sepura and a non- executive at CSG Systems and Nice Systems.

- Adrian Whitfield will join AZ Electronic Materials as a non-executive director in May. Whitfield, 49, is chief executive of Yule Catto, the chemicals company, and spent seven years as chief executive of DS Smith Plastics.

- Ron Marsh has joined British Polythene Industries as a non-executive director. The 60-year-old is chief executive of RPC, the plastic packaging supplier, and a director of the Packaging Federation.
