A BLOG about the Government massively underestimating how many TV sets will end up in landfill sites after the switch to digital broadcasting resulted in a flurry of online responses. While the Government estimates that the number going into landfill will increase by 2,000 a year, a recent survey shows that millions of homeowners are, in fact, planning to ditch their analogue TVs.

Dennis has no doubt what this means: “The bill for dealing with it will be passed to the likes of Sony, Toshiba and Phillips. But don’t expect the manufacturers to absorb this cost, they will pass it on to consumers in the form of more expensive electrical goods.”

John has another idea. He suggests that a small tax levied on the purchase of certain electrical items could finance the waste disposal, while Patrick O’Donohoe says that the money the Government gets for analogue licences should be used to finance the project.
