Blair’s leadership

Sir, In his adulatory article (Comment, August 2), Mr Peter Hain perhaps unwittingly puts his finger on the main problem with the present Government. He states that “the Prime Minister himself continues to tower over British politics”. Indeed, Mr Blair has detached himself so far from the normal democratic processes that they carry little weight in the running of the country.

I suspect that not only does he wish to tower above British politics but also those of the rest of the world increasingly dominated by the United States. Perhaps Mr Hain could persuade his leader to descend from his tower and take heed of the people on the ground.

Yours faithfully,

ALAN GREAVES,

32 Moor Road, Calverton,
