Blackburn to meet Vetra after Uefa action

Blackburn Rovers will play Lithuanian side FK Vetra in the Intertoto Cup third round after Uefa expelled Legia Warsaw from the competition following crowd trouble at the weekend.

Uefa officials abandoned the second-round match in Vilnius after fans of the Polish club clashed with police and fired numerous missiles onto the pitch.

FK Vetra had been winning 2-0 when the hooliganism started.

As well as their expulsion from the Intertoto Cup this season, Legia will also be banned for one future campaign should they qualify within the next five years.

They have also been ordered to contact Vetra within ten days to discuss compensation for the damage caused. The match has been awarded as a 3-0 win to Vetra by default.

“This is a painful punishment,” Monika Repizant, a Legia spokeswoman, said. “We are going to appeal. The club has until July 14 to do so. We are going to fight for the club to be able to take part in European cup matches in the 2008-09 season.”

With Vetra leading 2-0 after 45 minutes in Sunday’s match, several hundred of the estimated 2,500 visitors wrecked the stands and invaded the pitch after the half-time whistle. The Legia fans hurled concrete, bottles and flares at police officers who were on duty at the ground, and ripped up advertising hoardings to to try to block the horses, tear gas and baton charges which the security forces used to bring them under control.

The riot caused around €21,000 (approximately £14,000 dollars) of damage at the stadium.
