Pl?cido Domingo is having a busy Verdi week at the Met in New York. He conducted Stiffelio on Tuesday and tomorrow sings the lead in Simon Boccanegra, for the first time as a baritone. He has been appearing at the Met for 42 years and his performance will be shown live in some UK cinemas on February 6. He will reprise the part at Covent Garden for six nights starting on June 29. Of retirement, he says: “I won’t sing one day more than I should, but also I won’t sing one day less than I can.” Pl?cido Domingo is 69 today. RGT
