The Most Rev Séan Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, has been marking his ten years in the post by giving broadcast interviews. As leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland he reflected that though it has been a momentous time, covering much of the peace process, other issues have also taken his time, from the falling numbers of clergy estimated at 1,500, increasingly lower church attendance, his opposition to the movement to merge faith schools, to the sex-abuse scandals that have marred the Catholic Church in Ireland. While in no way minimising the problems, he said he takes a positive view. “We must go forward. We can’t be locked in the past.” Archbishop Brady is 67 today.
