Big River Man

John Maringouin, 15 (101min)

This extraordinary documentary follows in the footsteps of Man on Wire, whereby an individual sets out to accomplish an insane feat. In this case, the 52-year-old Slovenian endurance swimmer Martin Strel, the spit of Mr Incredible, sets his sights on the Amazon. It starts like Borat made by Werner Herzog; then turns into an unhinged downriver adventure. Strel doesn’t so much go native as animal — in the water he resembles a lithe hippo. After he dons a hat and white mask to protect himself from sunburn, a local tribe mistake him for a river demon and run screaming. An exhausted Strel ends up charging himself with a car battery at night. Meanwhile, his navigator goes slightly insane, turning into the berserk Dennis Hopper character from Apocalypse Now: “The river, God, and Martin — they’re all the same, man.” The end is so ridiculous that you fear it is a spoof. But it’s not. Strel is simply larger than life.
