Big boys earn big bucks

HOW much does the chief executive of a housing association earn? It depends on which journal you read.

Housing Today (Feb 11) reports that the national average chief executive’s salary in England is £81,212, but Social Housing magazine claims that it is £102,114, Public Finance (Feb 11) reports.

Housing Today’s salary survey finds that chief executives received a 4.3 per cent rise last year; Social Housing’s survey, however, put it at 7.9 per cent.

Either way, the guys in the top office do pretty well. Social Housing reports that 79 chief executives earn more than £100,000 a year. Housing Today found that 69 per cent had company cars worth on average £24,000 and many had private medical insurance, pensions and bonus schemes.

Elsewhere the picture was a little more grim. Housing Today’s survey of 8,332 people working at 89 housing associations found that heads of customer service had seen their salaries drop by nearly 20 per cent over the past year to £42,587. Property development officers had seen nearly 7 per cent shaved off their earnings to £23,067.

Care home managers had little to smile about with an average salary of £17,395 — the lowest paid being those in Yorkshire and Humber who earned a mere £11,651 on average.
