This year the firm represented the family of Daniel Morgan, a private detective who was murdered in a car park in south London in 1987, at the inquiry into his unsolved murder. It criticised the Metropolitan police for “institutional corruption” for their failure to bring his killer to justice.
Following Bhatt Murphy’s representation of a vulnerable 17-year-old black teenage girl with learning disabilities, a Metropolitan police officer was found guilty of gross misconduct and dismissed with immediate effect. A police disciplinary panel concluded that Benjamin Kemp had used excessive force, striking the teenager more than 30 times with a baton and using CS spray less than a metre from her face after she had gone to him for assistance.
The firm continues its involvement in the Grenfell Tower public inquiry, the inquiry into the death of Jermaine Baker, who was killed by a police officer during a foiled prison break, and the “Spycops” inquiry into the infiltration of spies into environmental groups by the Metropolitan police.
Among its international matters, Bhatt Murphy has worked with a team of lawyers to represent the family of the murdered Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
