Sir, Last year (October 24) you kindly published a light-hearted letter of mine regarding the relative merits of chess and other “mind games” in the educative process . Taking pity on me, Mr Brian Millward from Ayr wrote thereafter suggesting that I probably had access to as few chess opponents in far-flung Argyll as did he in Ayrshire and thus challenged me to two games of postal chess. Subsequently we have been exchanging moves by mail once or twice a week, at the same time comparing notes on life, the Universe and everything.
The first game has just reached its conclusion; the result isn’t important, but we shall continue to indulge in our own method of measuring the onset of old age.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
JOHN DOVE,
Belmont,
