This is Jack Butland, the England and Stoke City goalkeeper, on a miserable night at Old Trafford. Working in the rain can be difficult — not for personal reasons, I don’t care how wet I get — but for the good of your equipment.

Modern cameras are like mini-computers and their kryptonite is water, so it’s vital to keep it as dry as possible. There are camera covers that do the job but they are restrictive and cumbersome. I don’t know any photographer that likes working with the covers on.

On the plus side, however, the rain can create nice pictures and there are some ends at certain grounds that are drier than others, mainly because of the prevailing wind. With this picture I was trying to emphasize the conditions and used a slow shutter speed. I was slightly fortunate to catch the rain bouncing off the player, which I think makes the picture a little better.
