Behind the mask

When the Star Wars costume-makers created Darth Vader’s outfit, they cleverly incorporated a Second World War German helmet and gas mask into their design. Anonymity made the man monstrous.

It’s claimed that Saddam Hussein’s son Uday later had the helmets of his paramilitary units redesigned to emulate Vader’s, so that they would convey terror throughout Iraq.

Which may explain why this fighter chose this disguise before the attack on Abidjan in Ivory Coast. It has to be said, though, in the scary style stakes, pompoms just don’t cut it.
