Beauly Denny line

Numerous experts have rejected the need for this line — less environmentally damaging alternatives were rejected

Sir, It is wrong to suggest that the Beauly-Denny line is recognised as essential (“Minister accused of playing politics on Stirling power line”, thetimes.co.uk, Mar 9). Numerous experts, including Sir Donald Miller, a former chairman of Scottish Power, rejected the need for this particular line. Less environmentally-damaging alternatives put forward, including a strengthened east coast line and sub-sea cabling, were ignored.

This line is an example of blind politics being applied to an engineering problem.
