Baugur buys in Denmark

RETAILING Baugur, the Icelandic investment firm, has bought 50 per cent of Day Birger et Mikkelsen, the Danish fashion label, for an undisclosed sum.

The investment is via M-Invest, part of the Baugur-controlled M-Holding, which owns the Danish department stores Magasin and Illum. Day Birger is one of Denmark’s best-known fashion brands and is sold in British department stores, including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

The acquisition is part of Baugur’s increasing interest in Denmark. It is aiming to make further investments in fashion retail brands and is thought to be in talks with at least two other Danish brands.

That aim ties in with Baugur’s strategy of introducing more brands into House of Fraser, the British department store that it acquired this month, a tactic that it has adopted at Magasin and Illum.
