Bath water

Is it turning back the clock to install new-fangled drinking fountains in an attempt to minimise the use of plastic?

Sir, On the very day Matthew Parris opined that “nobody seriously suggests that Britain’s 19th-century drinking fountains be maintained”, Bath & NE Somerset Council announced the imminent installation of ten new and high-tech drinking fountains around its World Heritage city centre.

Named “Water Holes”, they are Dyson-designed and an attempt “to turn the tide against plastic bottled water in a city that should be synonymous with the substance”.

One hopes Mr Parris approves.
