Bark & Co is acting for the three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker, 53, who has been charged with hiding assets including a Chelsea flat and £1.2 million in cash from bankruptcy trustees.
In January the firm secured the acquittal of Maria Mester, who had been charged with others for allegedly playing a part in a series of high-profile burglaries. The case involved a plot to steal jewellery and cash worth more than £3 million from the homes of the socialite Tamara Ecclestone, the footballer and then Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the former owner of Leicester City Football Club.
The firm’s VAT and indirect tax practice has grown rapidly in recent years, as has the civil fraud team. Much of Bark & Co’s work in this area is confidential, but recent highlights include representing Dominic Chappell, the businessman who was sentenced to six years in jail after being convicted of tax evasion on the £2.2 million income he received from his takeover of BHS from the billionaire Sir Philip Green.
It also won a landmark Supreme Court ruling on behalf of Agnes Reeves Taylor, former wife of Charles Taylor, the jailed former president of Liberia. The ruling meant that the charges of torture that she had faced over alleged offences committed during the west African state’s civil war in 1990, which she denied, were dismissed.
