Bark and his bite

Dogs should beware of sleeping adders dozing in the sunshine, and larger beasts such as horses are not immune

Sir, Here, in the Preseli Hills, adders are common. The biggest danger is to dogs, who get bitten on the nose while unwisely investigating sleepy, bad-tempered snakes dozing in the spring sunshine. Dogs will usually die as the venom doesn’t have far to travel to the heart. Occasionally livestock will be bitten, on the nose or leg. We nearly lost a brood mare, whose leg swelled up, and not until the area around the bite fell out could the cause be identified.
