Barclays Premier League club by club transfer guide

Arsenal

Arsène Wenger has resisted the temptation to spend the £40 million collected from Manchester City for Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Tour?, with Thomas Vermaelen his only big signing of the summer. The Belgium defender looks a wonderful addition, but Arsenal could do with more cover at centre back and in central midfield.

In: D Martínez (Independiente, £1.2m), T Vermaelen (Ajax, £10m).

Out: E Adebayor (Manchester City, £25m), J Emmanuel-Thomas (Blackpool, loan), H Lansbury (Watford, loan), H Nordtveit (Nuremberg, loan), K Tour? (Manchester City, £14m).

Released: A Bischoff (Academica Coimbra), A Blackwood (Tottenham Hotspur), J Dunne (Exeter City), R Fonte (Sporting), A Ogogo (Dagenham & Redbridge), P Rodgers (Northampton Town), J Simpson (Queens Park Rangers, loan), R Steer (Oldham Athletic), V van den Berg (Excelsior).

Aston Villa

Attempts to replace Gareth Barry have led to the arrival of three left-footers who might manage it between them: Stephen Warnock, a versatile left back; Stewart Downing, who will best perform wide on the left of midfield when fit; and Fabian Delph, at 19, all poise and potential. Similarly, it may take James Collins and Richard Dunne to replace Martin Laursen, who has retired.

In: H Beye (Newcastle United, £3m), C Cameron (Northampton Town, undisc), F Delph (Leeds United, £6.5m rising to £8m), S Downing (Middlesbrough, £12m), R Dunne (Manchester City, £6m), A Marshall (Coventry City, free), S Warnock (Blackburn Rovers, £6m), J Collins (West Ham United, £5m).

Out: G Barry (Manchester City, £12m), Z Knight (Bolton Wanderers, £2m), M Laursen (retired).

Released: S Taylor (Manchester City).

Birmingham

Alex McLeish, the manager, has gone for a combination of the tried and still-to-be-trusted. Scott Dann and Roger Johnson were high-quality defenders in the Coca-Cola Championship, but even club directors must wonder how Christian Benítez and Giovanny Espinoza will fare. The signing of Joe Hart on a season’s loan is a sharp move.

In: C Benítez (Santos Laguna, Mexico, £1.2m loan), L Bowyer (West Ham United, free), S Dann (Coventry City, £3.5m), G Espinoza (Barcelona Sporting Club, Ecuador, £400,000), B Ferguson (Rangers, £1.5m), J Hart (Manchester City, loan), R Johnson (Cardiff City, £5m), J O’Shea (Galway United, nominal), T Tainio (Sunderland, loan), G Vignal (Lens, free).

Out: A Krysiak (Burton Albion, loan), K Pearce (Peterborough United, loan).

Released: S Kelly (Fulham), M McKerr (Oldham Athletic), J McPike (Kettering), M Nafti (Aris, Greece), R Jaidi.

Blackburn

Sam Allardyce, the manager, says he is happy, but there is an imbalance in outgoings and signings. Stephen Warnock’s exit could be damaging.

In: P Chimbonda (Tottenham Hotspur, £1.8m), F Di Santo (Chelsea, loan), N Giannakopoulos (Asteras Tripolis, Greece, £52,000), G Givet (Marseilles, £3.4m), E van Heerden (FC Bruges, free), N Kalinic (Hajduk Split, £6m), L Jacobsen (Everton, free), S N’Zonzi (Amiens, £400,000), M Salgado (Real Madrid, free).

Released: A Arestidou (Shrewsbury Town), J Clarke (Lincoln City), B Hodge (Partick Thistle), T Kane (Carlisle United), A Mokoena (Portsmouth), A Ooijer (PSV Eindhoven), Tugay Kerimoglu (retired), D Winnard (Accrington Stanley).

Bolton

A transfer strategy built mainly on bringing in proven Premier League players is in keeping with Gary Megson’s challenge to keep Bolton in the top flight. Four Englishmen have been attracted to the Reebok Stadium and Megson has by and large succeeded in keeping his squad together. The “ginger Mourinho” will hope and pray that Ivan Klasnic will be able to deliver the goals that his team need so badly. A long, hard season awaits otherwise.

In: Lee Chung Yong (Seoul, £2.2m), S Davis (Portsmouth, free), I Klasnic (Nantes, loan), Z Knight (Aston Villa, £2m), S Ricketts (Hull City, £1m), P Robinson (West Bromwich Albion, loan).

Out: B Dzemaili (Torino, nominal), T Obadeyi (Swindon Town, loan).

Released: J Sinclair, R Sissons, N Woolfe.

Burnley

The bookmakers’ pre-season favourites to be relegated have begun life in the Premier League surprisingly well and one of the main reasons is the way in which a number of Owen Coyle’s summer signings have settled immediately at Turf Moor. The Burnley manager has kept the vast majority of his squad together and supplemented it with quality and quantity.

In: A Bikey (Reading, £2m), B Easton (Hamilton Academical, £350,000), R Eckersley (Manchester United, subject to compensation), D Edgar (Newcastle United, subject to transfer tribunal), S Fletcher (Hibernian, £3m), F Guerrero (Independiente del Valle, Ecuador, loan), T Mears (Derby County, £500,000), D Nugent (Portsmouth, loan).

Out: A Kay and C Lynch (Chester City, loan), A MacDonald (Falkirk, loan).

Released: S Jones (Walsall), G Kiraly (1860 Munich), A Mahon (Tranmere Rovers).

Chelsea

Chelsea spent much of the summer promising a marquee signing, but their inability to deliver one reflected both Roman Abramovich’s reduced largesse and the manner in which Real Madrid have changed the rules of engagement in the transfer market. Yuri Zhirkov was the club’s only significant signing.

In: N Matic (MFK Kosice, £1.5m), D Sturridge (Manchester City, subject to tribunal), R Turnbull (Middlesbrough, free), Y Zhirkov (CSKA Moscow, £18m).

Out: B Sahar (Espanyol, £1m), R Bertrand (Reading, loan), J Cork (Coventry City, loan), S Cummings (West Bromwich Albion, loan), F Di Santo (Blackburn Rovers, loan), M Mancienne (Wolverhampton Wanderers, loan), J Mellis (Southampton, loan), F Nouble (West Ham United, undisclosed), M Nielsen (Alkmaar, nominal), C Pizarro (Werder Bremen, undisclosed), L Sawyer (Southend United, loan), A Shevchenko (Dynamo Kiev, free), S Sinclair (Wigan Athletic, loan), T Taiwo (Carlisle United, loan), S Tejera (Mallorca, nominal).

Released: J Smith (Leyton Orient).

Everton

The club’s summer was defined by one man — Joleon Lescott. Once it became clear that he had no interest in remaining at Everton, David Moyes, the manager, was forced into a new transfer strategy using the £24 million fee. The signings of Sylvain Distin, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and Johnny Heitinga suggest Moyes has again invested wisely.

In: C Arnoux (Carolina Dynamo, US, undisc), D Bilyaletdinov (Lokomotiv Moscow, £10m), S Distin (Portsmouth, £5m), L Garbutt (Leeds United, subject to compensation), J Heitinga (Atl?tico Madrid, £6m), Jô (Manchester City, loan), S Mustafi (Hamburg, subject to compensation), A Peterlin (Ventura County Fusion, US, nominal).

Out: K Jutkiewicz (Motherwell, loan), J P Kissock (Hamilton, nominal), J Lescott (Manchester City, £24m), T McCready (Hibernian, nominal), J Ruddy (Motherwell, loan).

Released: L Jacobsen (Blackburn Rovers), S Spencer (Rochdale), A van der Meyde, N Valente.

Fulham

Roy Hodgson sought to enlarge his squad at minimal cost for the demands of the Europa League, while fighting off interest in Brede Hangeland, the defender, from Arsenal, among other clubs. The Fulham manager had deals in the offing for several strikers entering the last day of the window, but settled on David Elm, of Kalmar, the Swedish club.

In: K Dikgacoi (Golden Arrows, South Africa, undisc), D Duff (Newcastle United, £2.5m), D Elm (Kalmar, undisclosed), J Greening (West Bromwich Albion, loan), B H Riise (Lillestr?m, £1.7m), S Kelly (Birmingham City, free).

Out: L Andreasen (Hannover 96, nominal), H Bouazza (Sivasspor, Turkey, undisc), A Leijer (Melbourne Victory, nominal).

Released: C John (KSV Roeselare, Belgium), M Volz, K Laribi.

Hull

Having avoided relegation narrowly last season, the summer has proved as much of a struggle for Hull City, who lost Michael Turner, their most accomplished defender, to Sunderland shortly before the window closed. Darren Bent was among the strikers who rejected Phil Brown’s advances, although they did sign Ibrahima Sonko on loan from Stoke City on deadline day.

In: J Altidore (Villarreal, loan), K Ghilas (Celta Vigo, £2m), S Hunt (Reading, £3m), P McShane (Sunderland, undisc), S Mouyokolo (Boulogne, £2m), S Olofinjana (Stoke City, £3m), I Sonko (Stoke City, loan).

Out: S Ricketts (Bolton Wanderers, £1m), M Turner (Sunderland, £6m rising to £12m).

Released: J Bennett, M Plummer and D Windass (all Darlington), M Bridges (Milton Keynes Dons), W Brown (Leicester City), R France (Sheffield United), J Lamplough, J Welsh (Tranmere Rovers), T Woodhead (Whitby Town).

Liverpool

Anfield officials insist the club have spent a net £20 million on transfers this summer, which does not seem to correspond with incomings and outgoings, and there is a growing consensus that the squad has not been improved as much as may have been expected. One positive has been the retention of several star players, including Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, on long-term deals.

In: A Aquilani (Roma, £18m), G Johnson (Portsmouth, £18.5m), S Kyrgiakos (AEK Athens, £1.5m), A King (Rushden & Diamonds, nominal), C Mavinga (Paris Saint-Germain, undisc).

Out: X Alonso (Real Madrid, £30m), A Ajdarevic (Leicester City, nominal), P Anderson (Nottingham Forest, £250,000), A Hammill (Barnsley, undisc), J Hobbs (Leicester City, undisc), S Hyypia (Bayer Leverkusen, released), S Leto (Panathinaikos, £3m), R Threlfall (Northampton Town, loan).

Manchester City

Sheikh Mansour promised to spend whatever it took to lift Manchester City up the table and the billionaire has proved to be a man of his word, with £118.5 million shelled out on half a dozen proven Premier League stars.

In: E Adebayor (Arsenal, £25m), G Barry (Aston Villa, £12m), J Lescott (Everton, £24m), R Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers, £18m), Sylvinho (unattached), S Taylor (Aston Villa, free), C T?vez (Media Sports Investments, £25.5m), K Tour? (Arsenal, £14m), N Zander (Schalke 04, undisc).

Out: V Bojinov (Parma, loan), F Caicedo (Sporting, loan), T Ben-Haim (Portsmouth, £1m), Elano (Galatasaray, £7m), R Dunne (Aston Villa, £5m), K Etuhu (Cardiff City, loan), C Evans (Sheffield United, £3m), G Fernandes (Saint-?tienne, £2m), J Hart (Birmingham, loan), Jô (Everton, loan), S Logan (Tranmere Rovers, loan), K Schmeichel (Notts County, £800,000), D Sturridge (Chelsea, subject to transfer tribunal).

Released: Glaúber, M Ball, D Hamann, D Mills, D Vassell (Ankarag?c?, Turkey).

Manchester Utd

After Gabriel Obertan became his fourth summer signing, Sir Alex Ferguson said that his spending was done. Few believed the United manager, but he has been as good as his word. Ferguson has stuck with his squad and he has not been tempted to pay sky-high prices for big names. However, the proceeds from the £80 million sale of Cristiano Ronaldo remain available should the right men become available in January.

In: L A Valencia (Wigan Athletic, £15.25m), Mame Biram Diouf (Molde, Norway, undisc), M Owen (Newcastle United, free), G Obertan (Bordeaux, £3m).

Out: Mame Biram Diouf (Molde, Norway, loan), F Campbell (Sunderland, £3.5m, rising to £6m), R Eckersley (Burnley, subject to compensation), Manucho (Valladolid, undisclosed), L Martin (Ipswich Town, undisclosed), R Possebon (Braga, loan), C Ronaldo (Real Madrid, £80m), C T?vez (loan ended).

Portsmouth

Portsmouth appear to have got rid of many high-earning players and bought sensibly, but Paul Hart will have to integrate the new faces quickly. With nul points from four matches, the only way is . . .

In: K-P Boateng (Tottenham Hotspur, £4m), T Ben-Haim (Manchester City, £1 million), M Brown (Wigan Athletic, nominal), A Dindane (Lens, loan), S Finnan (Espanyol, free), J O’Hara (Tottenham Hotspur, loan), A Mokoena (Blackburn Rovers, free), A Niemi (unattached), F Piquionne (Lyons, loan), T Smith (Watford, £1.2m), A Vanden Borre (Genoa, loan), M Williamson (Watford, £3m), H Yebda (Benfica, loan).

Out: A Blackman (Bristol City, undisc), M Cranie (Coventry City, £600,000), P Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur, £10m), S Distin (Everton, £5m), G Johnson (Liverpool, £18.5m), T Kilbey (Dagenham & Redbridge, loan), N Kranjcar (Tottenham Hotspur, £2.5m), D Nugent (Burnley, loan).

Released: S Davis (Bolton Wanderers), S Campbell (Notts County), N Pamarot (Hercules Alicante), G Little (Sheffield United), J Thomas (West Bromwich Albion), Lauren, D Traor? (Monaco).

Stoke

You have to take your hat off to Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager, and Peter Coates, his chairman. They have raised the bar by adding to the supreme solidity of their ranks a player of the ability of Tuncay Sanli, the striker. With Robert Huth, Danny Collins and Dean Whitehead also arriving, £20 million has been spent bolstering a squad that finished in mid-table last season, suggesting that Stoke should be safe this term.

In: D Arismendi (Club Nacional, £2.6m rising to £4.8m), D Collins (Sunderland, £2.75m rising to £3m), R Huth (Middlesbrough, £5m rising to £6m), B Marshall and M Lund (Crewe Alexandra, nominal), Tuncay Sanli (Middlesbrough, £5m), D Whitehead (Sunderland, £3m rising to £5m).

Out: S Olofinjana (Hull City, £3m), B Marshall (Northampton Town, loan), I Sonko (Hull, loan).

Released: M Grocott, V P?ricard, J Phillips, T Thorley.

Sunderland

Steve Bruce has slashed at a bloated first-team squad and added steeliness to its spine. They have made a statement signing in Darren Bent, added commitment in Lorik Cana and Lee Cattermole and brought in a big man at the back in Michael Turner.

In: D Bent (Tottenham, £10m rising to £16.5m), L Cana (Marseilles, £5m), F Campbell (Manchester United, £3.5m rising to £6m), L Cattermole (Wigan Athletic, £6m), P Da Silva (Toluca, Mexico, free), J Mensah (Lyons, loan), M Turner (Hull, £6m rising to £12m).

Harry Redknapp’s dealing stuttered on the final day, but he did bolster his defence with S?bastien Bassong.

In: S Bassong (Newcastle United, £8m rising to £12m), A Blackwood (Arsenal, free), P Crouch (Portsmouth, £10m), N Kranjcar (Portsmouth, £2.5m), K Naughton (Sheffield United, £2.5m rising to £5m), K Walker (Sheffield United, £1.5m rising to £3m).

West Ham

Gianfranco Zola obtained assurances from the owners that none of his first team would be sold and with no acceptable offers for Matthew Upson, the defender, the manager had little fresh money to play with. Zola ended his search for a second striker by signing Alessandro Diamanti.

In: M da Costa (Fiorentina, Savio + £3m), F Daprela (Grasshopper Zurich, Switzerland, undisc), A Diamanti (Livorno, £1.5m rising to £5m), H Ilunga (Toulouse, £2m), L Jim?nez (Inter Milan, loan), R Kovac (Spartak Moscow, £1.8m), P Kurucz (Ujpest, Hungary, nominal), J Lampe (Harlow Town, undisc), F Nouble (Chelsea, undisc).

Wigan Athletic

The sales of Antonio Valencia to Manchester United and Lee Cattermole to Sunderland gave Roberto Martínez, the new manager, the kind of lucrative transfer fund he needed to make his mark at the North West club and he has done that with seven signings in his first two months in the job. The retention of the versatile Paul Scharner seems particularly crucial to their hopes.

In: A Amaya (Rayo Vallecano, £1.5m), M Diam? (Rayo Vallecano, £2m), J G?mez (Espanyol, £1.7m), J McCarthy (Hamilton Academical, £1.2m rising to £3m), H Thomas (Deportivo Olimpia, Honduras, £1m), S Sinclair (Chelsea, loan), J Scotland (Swansea City, £1.5m).

Released: H Camara, A Sibierski.

Wolves

Have learnt from their previous season in the Premier League by allowing Mick McCarthy to add to his squad. Kevin Doyle looks top quality, at a club-record £6.5 million, and the long throws of Greg Halford and the gigantic frame of Stefan Maierhofer should offer an option B if Nenad Milijas’s creativity falters.

In: S Castillo (Red Star Belgrade, loan), K Doyle (Reading, £6.5m), M Hahnemann (Reading, free), G Halford (Sunderland, £2m), S Maierhofer (Rapid Vienna, undisclosed), M Mancienne (Chelsea, loan), N Milijas (Red Star Belgrade, undisc), A Surman (Southampton, £1.2m), R Zubar (Marseilles, £2.7m).
