Banse/Henschel

Classical

Prometheus

Harmonia Mundi

Hugo Wolf orchestrated 24 out of his lieder output (some 300 songs). And here they are, shared between Juliane Banse (wonderful) and Dietrich Henschel (a rung below), with Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The orchestral treatments expand on the music’s emotions, though only in Prometheus does this truly improve the song. Interesting listening, if not essential.
