Ballot boxes at rail stations and shops

People will be able to vote early at special polling stations in supermarkets and railway stations before the May 4 local elections. Sixteen local councils across the country are to test new ideas for increasing turnout and ending out postal fraud. Lord Falconer of Thoroton, the Lord Chancellor, will announce the move today.

Councils will open polling stations on days before May 4 that could prove more convenient to some voters. They will also provide mobile polling stations for those who would be helped by the ballot box going to them. Locations will include care homes, university campuses and military bases.
