Marcos Baghdatis, the Cypriot, continued his surprising run at the Australian Open, advancing to the men’s final today after a five set battle against David Nalbandian.

Baghdatis, ranked No 54 in the world, had already defeated Andy Roddick, the No 2 seed, and Ivan Ljubicic, the No 7 seed, in previous rounds. The 20-year-old overcame Nalbandian 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in a dramatic match that was at one stage halted due to heavy rain.

Baghdatis was serving for the match after battling back from two sets down, leading his Argentinian opponent 5-4 in the final set, when the Rod Laver Arena was hit by a downpour. But he kept his composure after the delay to preserve his lead and advance to his first Grand Slam final.
