Baggage angst

Sir, It is not only musicians who are suffering with the current restrictions on airline carry-on baggage (report, Sept 9, letters since Aug 21). The depth criterion of 16cm limits bags to briefcase-type items. People with severe spinal injuries, like myself, may not be able to carry this type of case.

I can carry only rucksack-type bags and there is none, with adequate padding, that meets the depth criterion. The restrictions imposed by the Department for Transport constitute, in my view, an offence under the Disability Discrimination Act. Perhaps they would take this into account when reviewing the restrictions?

Sir, I applaud George Barbour’s suggestion (letter, Sept 9) that a separate part of an aircraft’s hold be set aside for storing valuable items. If the definition of “valuable items” was broad enough to include babies and young children, I’m sure the applause would be deafening.
