Bag of tricks: Claudia Schiffer

I never wore make-up until I became a model. So everything I’ve learnt has been from the best of the best make-up artists. Nowadays, I have an Anya Hindmarch make-up bag that has a picture of my kids on it. Inside I always carry my essentials. L’Oréal Paris Touche Magique Concealer has a really light texture but gives great coverage under the eyes. Lancôme Teint Renergie is my favourite foundation: it has an SPF20 and contains light-reflecting particles.

For mascara, L’Oréal Lash Architect in midnight black always does the trick. I like wearing lipstick for special occasions, but in the day I prefer lip balms. Kiehl’s lip balm is wonderfully soothing. It protects lips from drying out and has a slight hint of colour. I prefer to use wash-off cleansers – they’re more practical. Although it is rather indulgent, I rinse my face with Evian water. I feel it really cleans and softens my skin. The water in big cities is often hard and tends to dry my skin.

I like to keep my look as natural as possible during the day, but for special evenings I really like being a little more audacious. I recently collaborated with James Kaliardos (make-up artist for L’Oréal Paris) who has developed a lipstick shade especially for me. It is a really intense shade of bronze with sparkling flecks of fuchsia called Color Riche Star Secrets in Claudia Bronze. It’s very bold and elegant, perfect for my hair shade, skin tone and eye colour.

In all my time as a model I learnt to keep make-up light. Imagine that you are revealing or enhancing, not covering or masking. You can only look beautiful if you look after yourself both outside and within. Catherine Deneuve is my icon: a real classic beauty.
