Baby’s card marks car crash spot

A card bearing the message, “To my Daddy” lay among flowers yesterday as friends and relatives paid tribute to a family of five who died in a head-on car crash in Cumbria on Father’s Day.

The card also bore a photograph of Luca Stott, aged four months, who died with his parents and two young aunts when their Ford Escort collided with a Toyota Prius on the A6 near Penrith.

The driver of the Toyota, Stanley Critchley, 84 from Northenden, Greater Manchester, also died in the crash. His wife Elizabeth, 79, is critically ill in hospital in Carlisle.

Relatives and friends of the Stott family gathered throughout the day to place flowers at the roadside between Plumpton and Stoneybeck. The others who died were named as the driver, Ricky Stott, 19, a car mechanic, Sarah Wigham, 21, their son Luca, and Mr Stott’s sisters Kirsty, 17, and Lyndsey, 8, all from Penrith.

The Father’s Day card for Mr Stott had been placed at the spot by a family member.
