B Boy

Sony/PS2 (£29.99)

If sport can be referred to as war without guns, then B-Boy is a console fighting game without the punching and kicking. That’s not to say that anything is missing — this game is far from dull.

The object is to breakdance your way through a series of street “fights” and prove that you are the hippest of the hip. The art is in mastering all the moves, from base moves such as the windmill and the top rock, to more complicated combinations.

There are two gameplay options, arcade and story mode, and a satisfying tutorial — it is possible to pick up the moves quickly but performing them to a suitable standard can take a while to master.

The danger with a title such as B-Boy is that it’s too specialised to appeal to a gamer with no interest in the subject, which is a shame: it’s a fun game that provides all the spectacle of breakdancing without the trip to the chiropractor afterwards.
