How to do weekend dressing this autumn

Act casual in autumn’s most stylish staples: jumpers, jeans and a great pair of trainers

If there was a season made for dressing down, it is autumn. There’s nothing like falling leaves and the prospect of a long Sunday lunch in the pub ― which finishes way after the sun has set ― to make you want to reach for a good jumper and a pair of jeans. Jessica Stam, the model at the heart of this autumnal fashion story, also makes a stellar case for keeping things casual, with vintage-inspired trainers (praise be, the Adidas Gazelle is back) and plaid shirts, worn open over basic vests, among her greatest on-trend looks.

Denim is key, of course.

This season, if you want your jeans to feel of-the-moment, we’d suggest going for a pair that are loose and long. Wash wise, indigo or true blue is a good idea, avoiding anything overly treated or embellished. There’s a sporty vibe too, which means zip-up sweats and jumpers worn tied around the waist or slung over the shoulders are also having a moment. Team with messy hair and a lived-in pair of trainers. On the hunt for the perfect autumn jacket, let your quest begin and end with a brown blazer. In suede, corduroy or wool, this is the 2023 take on Ali MacGraw in Love Story.
