Autograph shy

How sad to read Jane Harper’s letter (Aug 12) about the reluctance of England cricketers to sign autographs after the Test match victory at Headingley. But such behaviour is not new. As a boy in the 1960s I often waited at a cricket ground for signatures. While such players as Geoffrey Boycott, Colin Cowdrey, Derek Underwood and Colin Milburn were always happy to oblige (Cowdrey requesting an orderly queue), others — among them a recently departed “fiery” fast bowler — were very reluctant.
