August 23: League Two round up

BOSTON UNITED (0) 1 MACCLESFIELD TOWN (0) 1

Boston manager Steve Evans: Macclesfield came here as the top-of-the-table side, but I felt it was a game we dominated throughout. There was always only one team trying to win it. We just got caught by a sucker punch, which was hugely disappointing because we switched off for a moment. But we got straight back into the game and we might have even gone on to win it from there.

Macclesfield manager Brian Horton: On the whole it was a good point and probably a fair result. What disappointed me a little, though, was that we conceded a goal so soon after we had gone in front.

Blinder: Courtney Pitt. Stinker: Mark Bailey.

BURY (0) 1 CHESTER CITY (1) 1

Bury manager Graham Barrow: It was a good second half but I was disappointed with our first-half performance and we need to learn how to come out and play well from the start. You can’t knock the players though. We just wanted somebody on the end of some of those crosses. Looking at the results today it would seem everybody has had an up and down day and it looks like things are settling down now.

Chester caretaker manager Ray Mathias: I was delighted with the work the lads put in but disappointed with the goal we conceded — it went in at the near post and cost us the game.

Blinder: Wayne Brown. Stinker: Lee Unsworth.

DARLINGTON (0) 0 BRISTOL ROVERS (0) 1

Darlington manager Dave Hodgson: Apart from the opening five minutes we were on top. We were so much in control that at no point did I think we would not come away with three points.

Bristol Rovers manager Ian Atkins: It took us seven hours to get here and we had to concede a lot of possession because we were jaded from the journey. But I can’t really remember them having a shot. Basically we just stuck at it. When you look heavy like we did you’ve got to make sure you take something from the game, and we did that because everyone stuck to their tasks.

Blinder: Junior Agogo. Stinker: Craig Russell.

LEYTON ORIENT (0) 0 OXFORD UNITED (0) 0

Leyton Orient manager Martin Ling: It was the best we’ve played so far and we might have won but their goalkeeper made some outstanding saves. The verdict so far with five points from four games is average.

Oxford manager Graham Rix: We knew it would be a tough game here, it’s not an easy place to come. I am delighted with the spirit. We have lost goals this season not through bad play but through losing concentration so we have worked hard on that all week and I was pleased with the way we stuck at it. Not great football, but I will settle for a point away from home.

Blinder: David Hunt. Stinker: Barry Quinn.

MANSFIELD TOWN (1) 2 KIDDERMINSTER HARR (1) 1

Mansfield manager Keith Curle: All credit to Kidderminster, they caused us a few problems. But we missed so many chances in the second half that you always worry you will leave the door open.

Kidderminster manager Jan Molby: I am disappointed but Mansfield did play very well. They created a few chances but so did we and I thought we should have had a penalty. We got the early goal and I think the first half was very even. It was certainly an ideal start, unfortunately we couldn’t build on it. When they got the goal early in the second half we were made to push forward.

Blinder: Neil MacKenzie. Stinker: Jesper Christiansen.

NOTTS COUNTY (0) 1 YEOVIL TOWN (0) 2

Notts County manager Gary Mills: No way did Yeovil outplay us at any stage. If any of our fans have gone away from this game saying we are not a good side, I totally disagree with them.

Yeovil manager Gary Johnson: I’m relieved because we took a peppering in the first half. When I took my Cambridge teams here I always enjoyed it. Big Sam was manager at the time, they have changed a little bit since then as in personnel, but the stadium is a decent stadium. County will be a formidable side with the way they play. They won’t lose many games at Meadow Lane.

Blinder: Darren Way. Stinker: David Pipe.

RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS (0) 1 GRIMSBY TOWN (0) 0

Rushden manager Ernie Tippett: For a lot of the match we were second best and you have to give Grimsby credit for being the better team. We will be working in training on getting to second balls.

Grimsby manager Russell Slade: It is difficult to know what to say to the players after dominating for such long periods of the game. We’d done well in the first three games, the lads had been great in training and we were confident ahead of the trip to Rushden — though we knew it would be tough. We scored five goals last week and probably had more chances this time.

Blinder: Billy Turley. Stinker: Terry Fleming.

SCUNTHORPE UNITED (1) 3 LINCOLN CITY (0) 2

Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws: I can’t fault the efforts of the players. We wanted to keep things tight, and still be in with a chance come half-time, and that was what happened. We got cocky when we went two goals up though. That gave them a goal and they then got up a head of steam. But we didn’t let our heads drop.

Lincoln manager Keith Alexander: We were very poor from start to finish. But we ought to have come away with a point. I’m very disappointed, you can’t let good teams like Scunthorpe come back at you.

Blinder: Andy Butler. Stinker: Gregory Pearson.

SHREWSBURY TOWN (0) 2 NORTHAMPTON TOWN (0) 0

Shrewsbury manager Jimmy Quinn: We desperately needed a win after such a disappointing start to our new season. I thought both red cards were justified. Ben Smith was left with stud marks high into the groin by the tackle that got Amoo sent off.

Northampton manager Colin Calderwood: Arrving late was not ideal. We were stuck in traffic. We usually arrive at least 1½ hours before an away match and obviously it disrupted our pre-match preparations. We were slow out of the blocks and obviously we had the red cards.

Blinder: Eric Sabin. Stinker: David Edwards.

SOUTHEND UNITED (0) 0 CAMBRIDGE UNITED (0) 0

Southend manager Steve Tilson: I would be more worried if we were not creating chances. I feel sure our luck will turn and that was one ingredient which was missing this afternoon. We had plenty in this game but did not put them away. We should have been two or three goals up at half-time but it was not to be.

Cambridge manager Herve Renard: We could have well snatched all three points in the final minute but I’m happy with the one we’re taking back. This result will give us an extra boost in confidence.

Blinder: Mark Bentley. Stinker: Wayne Gray.

SWANSEA CITY (0) 1 CHELTENHAM TOWN (1) 1

Swansea manager Kenny Jackett: We played very well and dominated the game but there is a great deal of frustration at not finishing it off with the win we deserved. I thought it was going to be one of those days, where we had a lot of chances but couldn’t score. Lee took his goal well and like all of the players has worked very hard.

Cheltenham manager John Ward: I’m happy with the attitude but disappointed that we gave Trundle the space from which he equalised. Once he gets the ball in the area he is very difficult to stop.

Blinder: Grant McCann. Stinker: Kayode Odejayi.
