Sir, Your obituary of Arthur Miller (February 12) does not give his third wife, Inge Morath, her due.
They met on the set of The Misfits and were married for 40 years until her death. She was an exceptionally distinguished photographer and was responsible for the still photographs of that production. As a young woman her postwar photography caught the attention of Robert Capa, and she worked with Henri Cartier Bresson.
When in New York, the Millers lived in our apartment building, but although we had friends in common I never had the nerve to say anything. Elevator etiquette prevailed until one day he smiled at me and said: “You’re Charlotte’s friend, I should know your name.” No wonder Marilyn married him.
Our doormen, the fiercest critics, thought the world of him.
Yours faithfully,
