Art: Stephanie Deady

Art doesn’t have to mean anything, or any one thing. Stephanie Deady, a young Limerick artist, says her paintings “simply encourage a language of looking”. This is her first solo show but the quiet assurance and achieved feel of the work suggest a more mature talent. The paintings are in two groupings: large pastel interiors of a room, her studio perhaps, where some art activity has been taking place; and smaller, more confined views of the corner of a kitchen — with figures glimpsed through a window, darkly. Each painting within its group shares the same viewpoint but the details vary — encouraging you to look harder. A painting rests in the corner in one, the corner is empty in another. A washing-up bowl appears and disappears. In two of them an incomplete figure intrudes on the scene. A more abstract diptych completes the show, demonstrating much the same cool balance and decorum as the interiors — apart from a broad intruding brushstroke and a few white blotches in one corner playfully undermining the pristine rigour of the piece.
