Art Choice

This beautifully selected exhibition celebrates the career of Japanese woodblock print artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1848). Hokusai is notable for his productivity — a large volume of prints and illustrations for books and artists’ manuals produced over 70 years — and for the intricate, highly detailed nature of his work, such as The Sea off Kazusa, above. The 75 works on show indicate his skill in expressing Japan’s culture and natural beauty. Hokusai depicts plants and flowers with exceptional realism, heightened by the close-up views he favours. Similarly, he dramatises the landscape in works such as The Hanganji Temple at Asakusa in Edo, where the roof of a Buddhist temple is echoed in the form of Mount Fiji in the background.
