This survey of Caro Niederer’s works offers an intriguing insight into the development of her views on artistic practice. The earlier, small-scale paintings, such as Merry Christmas and Candle and Flowers, are flat, brightly coloured depictions of rather generic still lifes or tourist destinations. From these she developed her wall-sized silk carpets, such as Zurich Airport, which also feature childlike representations of much-visited locales, while adding an Eastern dimension to her work. Another subsection features almost monochrome landscapes and a still life of flowers, rendered in sepia tones that evoke their origin in photography. Large C-prints, such as Schoolboy II, left, feature images of the artist’s works in some of the homes of the collectors who have bought them. They make transparent, Warhol-like, the steps involved in art dealings, becoming palimpsests that trace the process behind the images in a quietly subversive manner.
