Headbox, an installation comprising sculpture and video, is the latest investigation into the paranormal by the Belfast-born artist Susan MacWilliam. Her starting point is the story of Rosa Kuleshova, whose ability to read with her fingertips was subjected to scientific testing in Russia in the 1960s. MacWilliam’s work recalls the experiments: the collars and screens used to block Kuleshova’s vision appear in several pieces, including rudimentary wall-mounted boxes on which images are projected and from which sounds emanate. The lack of visual appeal of the wooden forms urges the viewer to engage with the pieces. This interaction also forges a bond between the artist, who is examining the nature of perception, and the viewer, who is invited to reconsider ways of perceiving art.
